CHIESA SAN MICHELE ARCANGELO

CHURCH OF SAINT MICHELE ARCHANGEL

The church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel was built in 1680 by Antonio de Acampora, who reserved for himself and his inheritors, burial in the pit erected at his own expense in the floor, as evidenced by the marble plaque affixed to the closure.

Description and artwork

Period: 17th century

Equipped with a small bell tower and a single nave, it has internally, on the side walls, arches resting on masonry columns. On the altar is a polychrome oil painting depicting St. Michael in the act of spearing the devil. The work by seventeenth-century painter Andrea Malinconico features very vivid colors.

The structure of the small building is typical of the ancient Agerola churches; in fact, one notices, the flatness of the outer walls with a straight trapezoidal section, the small window and the covering arch over the portal, which originally must have been much more prominent, as well as some reinforcing bumps.

The facade takes on a “simply monumental” appearance: a stone staircase composed of wide steps elevates it from its immediate surroundings.
